School Counselor
Social worker LuAnne Montgomery does individual counseling with students/parents as well as group counseling for students with common concerns. Mrs. Montgomery also conducts guidance sessions once a quarter in each classroom on various topics: bullying, friendship, empathy, rumors, cliques, self-esteem, etc. She consults with parents on school and/or family issues. LuAnne also connects parents and families to available community resources and collaborates with those agencies. She is available five days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 A.M. until 3:45 P.M, and Friday from 9:00 until noon. If you would like to speak with her, please send a note or leave a telephone message.
Learning Center/Special Education
Learning Center teachers Colleen Zehr and Jane Latty have many responsibilities–from insuring that our standardized testing is completed efficiently to working with small groups and individuals who flourish under their care. They also coordinate all communication with the Blue Valley School District for those who need the special resources available there. Blue Valley offers programs to students who are talented and gifted, learning disabled, speech and hearing impaired, and physically handicapped. The teacher, the parent, or the principal may make referrals for these programs. Specialists from the public schools will determine the level of talent or the severity of need in each child referred and propose an appropriate plan/recommendation. With guidance from the Blue Valley specialists and Ascension’s Learning Center teachers, the Ascension staff will do its best to nurture and respond to the individual needs and learning styles of each child. Please contact the child’s homeroom teacher or one of the Learning Center teachers to initiate an academic evaluation.
Ascension Catholic School is fortunate to have six paraprofessionals who work under the guidance of the Learning Center.
School Nurse

She assists in providing interventions for students with special health care or dietary needs and coordinates vision and hearing screening through the Blue Valley School District. Emily administers over-the-counter and physician-prescribed medications. She also triages student accidents and illnesses and treats accordingly. She communicates with parents via email, phone calls, and written notes home. Our school nurse oversees immunization compliance as outlined by the Kansas Statutes for School Health Services. Below are the forms parents may access for their child:
